2025 Distinguished Alum

Barbara Berry Spaeth

Barbara Berry Spaeth has built a life and legacy rooted in one core value: service. A proud member of the William Mason High School Class of 1978, Barbara’s journey has taken her across Kentucky and back home again to Mason—where she continues to uplift others with humility, compassion, and action.

After earning her Bachelor and Master of Social Work degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, Barbara dedicated over two decades to serving children and families. Her work included supporting survivors of domestic violence, training foster and adoptive parents, advocating for crime victims, and helping place children with special needs in loving homes.

Barbara returned to Mason in 1999 to raise her daughter and care for her parents. She later worked more than a decade in Mason City Schools’ Child Nutrition Department, where she found joy in encouraging students each day. Her commitment to her hometown community soon led her to public office. First elected to Mason City Council in 2011, Barbara served two terms, including four years as Vice Mayor. Re-elected in 2021, she served as Mayor of Mason from 2021 to 2023. During her tenure, Barbara championed efforts to preserve the Cincinnati Open tennis tournament, supported the creation of the inclusive Common Ground Playground and Adaptive Ball Fields, and played a key role in welcoming Vega’s North American HQ to Mason. Her work helped secure Mason’s ranking as the 4th Best Place to Live in the U.S.

Today, Barbara continues to serve through local organizations including Safe on Main, the Mary Ann Klingling Advisory Board, and Mason Kiwanis. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Barbara’s lifelong service stands as a powerful reflection of the values instilled in her as a Mason Comet.
